After revealing his identity as Iron Man, Tony Stark becomes a global icon. But his problems are piling up:

• The arc reactor keeping him alive is poisoning him.

• The U.S. government demands he turn over the Iron Man tech.

• A new villain, Ivan Vanko (Whiplash), seeks revenge for his father's past.

• Stark's rival, Justin Hammer, is trying to outdo him with his own suits.

• Meanwhile, S.H.I.E.L.D. and Nick Fury begin monitoring Stark more closely.

As Tony spirals due to his mortality and recklessness, he must rediscover his purpose, invent a new element to power his heart safely, and take down Vanko, who has upgraded his tech and hacked Hammer's drones.
